Understanding the foreign residency laws in Azerbaijan can be quite confusing sometimes. This confusion is quite normal as many conditions of different types of residencies might sound the same.

If you’re planning to settle in the country, it is important to understand what makes temporary residency different from permanent residency in Azerbaijan to know the best-suited option for you according to your purpose of staying in the country. In this article, we’ll look at the difference between temporary and permanent residency in Azerbaijan and compare them in different aspects to derive a conclusion regarding which type of residency will be the best for you based on your reason for travel.

Different Types of Residencies in Azerbaijan

Different travelers have different motives to settle in Azerbaijan. The need for a residence visa can differ based on the duration of stay, amount of investment they’re planning to bring into the country, future expectations, etc. thus, Azerbaijan offers 3 different types of residence permits to choose from if you’re a foreign national who is planning to settle in the country.

Here is the list of residency options in Azerbaijan.

  • Temporary Residence Permit (TRP)

As the name suggests, TRP is a short-term residency option through which a foreign national can stay in Azerbaijan temporarily. It is also the first step to getting a permanent residency in the country.

  • Permanent Residence Permit (PRP)

An Azerbaijan permanent residence permit is received after a foreign national has completed a period of 2 years in the country on a temporary residence permit. This means that this permit is the next stage of residency after a temporary residence permit.

  • Permanent Residency (PR)

Permanent Residency (PR) is the ultimate permit where a foreign national is declared as a citizen of Azerbaijan and he/she has all the rights and duties of an Azerbaijani citizen. This is only received after the individual has completed a period of 5 years in the country on a permanent residence visa

Temporary Vs. Permanent Residency in Azerbaijan

Since we have looked at the different residency options that Azerbaijan offers, let’s look at what makes temporary residency different from permanent residency so that you can decide which one is the best option for you.

1. Validity

The first aspect that differentiates a temporary residence permit from a permanent one is the validity. Talking about a temporary residence permit, it is valid for up to 3 years. However, it allows you to switch to a permanent permit after you have completed 2 years in the country.

On contrary, a permanent residence permit in Azerbaijan allows a maximum stay of 5 years. After you have stayed in the country for 5 years, you’re eligible to get your Permanent Residency (PR).

2. Conditions for Approval

Both these visas are approved under different conditions. In other words, you need to meet certain eligibility criteria to apply for these permits. You need to fulfill any of the following conditions to get a temporary residence permit in Azerbaijan.

  • You should be married to a citizen of Azerbaijan
  • Your close family member(s) live in Azerbaijan
  • You have invested 500.000 AZN 100,000 in the country’s real estate
  • Have opened a bank account with a deposit of AZN 50,000 in Azerbaijan
  • Are a regular student at an Aerbaiajn-based university
  • Hold a valid work permit in Azerbaijan
  • Must be a specialist in the economy, defence, science, or culture

On the other hand, if you want to obtain a permanent residence permit in Azerbaijan, you need to meet the following conditions.

  • Have stayed in Azerbaijan for 2 years
  • Know a local language
  • Have knowledge about the general laws in the country
  • Have knowledge about the country’s historic fundamentals

3. Extension

There is a difference in the visa extension rules for both these visas. Looking at the temporary residence permit, this visa can be extended up to 4 times. Each extension provides an additional validity of 1 year, which means that the maximum period allowed on this visa is 5 years.

A permanent residence visa is also extendable but the difference lies in the period of extension. All foreign nationals and stateless persons can get their permanent permits extended for 5 years once.
