The Situation of COVID-19 in Azerbaijan

On average, Azerbaijan witnessed nearly 0 new COVID-19 cases between March end and mid-July 2022, placing the country among the nations with the lowest COVID-19 infection rate. As of July 27, 2022, the country witnessed a slight rise in cases with a total of 399 cases.

New COVID-19 Guidelines in Azerbaijan  

The new COVID-19 guidelines have been much easier and more flexible because of the declining rate of infection. These guidelines cover not only the new international traveling guidelines but also the general rules to be followed in public places in Azerbaijan.  

Here is a brief of the new COVID-19 guidelines issued by the government of the Republic of Azerbaijan w.e.f May 1, 2022.  

  1. It is no longer mandatory for residents and travelers to wear a face mask in public places  
  2. On March 5, 2022, the Cabinet of Ministers allowed restaurants, bars, gyms, cultural facilities, including children’s entertainment facilities, movie theaters, religious places of worship, airport seeing off and picking up areas, and all other facilities to operate at their full capacity i.e. there will no longer be any restrictions on the timing and capacity of these places. 
  3. As per the orders of the ministry, a negative COVID-19 test report is no longer required for entering Azerbaijan w.e.f April 15, 2022. 
  4. Every foreign traveler traveling to Azerbaijan must carry a valid COVID Passport, which is a document that declares that the holder is fully-vaccinated against COVID-19. 
  5. As per the orders on July 24, 2021, all foreign nationals having close relatives (such as parents, grandparents, siblings, spouses, etc)  in Azerbaijan need not show a COVID passport to enter the country. However, it is mandatory to show valid proof of relationship to enter the country.  
  6. Work visa and permanent residency holders need not present a COVID passport 
  7. Baku metro along with every other public transport has been reopened on May 31 and is functioning full-fledged on weekdays as well as weekends. 
  8. Sports centers, beaches, health centers, places of worship, shopping centers, and malls were reopened for tourists in 2021, provided that they follow the COVID norms very strictly. 
  9. As per the order by the Cabinet of Ministers in September 2022, all foreign nationals are allowed to use their COVID passport (or a vaccination certificate declaring complete vaccination against COVID-19) to access hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, or any other place that demands a COVID-19 passport.  
  10. All individuals (citizens as well as travelers) of age 18 or above are required to show a vaccination certificate for entering indoor public places like malls and restaurant

COVID-19 Testing Rules in Azerbaijan 

If you’re a foreign national traveling to Azerbaijan, it is mandatory for you to get tested for COVID-19. You’ll receive your PCR or rapid antigen test report within one calendar day of getting tested at the airport.  

It must be noted that all the costs of getting tested for COVID-19 in Azerbaijan will be borne by the traveler only. A rapid antigen test or a PCR test will cost you around AZN 100. Make sure to get tested through an authorized lab. You can receive your test report through email or a text message depending on the lab you’re getting tested from.
